Blåkulla

$1,000.00

Original one of a kind painting. 18 x 24 inches framed to 23.5 x 29.5 inches. Acrylic on birch panel.

Blåkulla is the yearly witches' sabbath held on Maundy Thursday by the Devil himself on a Swedish island, said to be reached only by a magical broomstick flight. Actually, it is a real island, Blå Jungfrun (The Blue Maiden) in the Baltic Sea where an ancient stone labyrinth built of sandstone rocks spirals mysteriously; one of such stones the Devil perches upon in this piece. Also seen are garden angelica, wood anemones and bilberries; native plants to the island.
The sabbath would be held in the Devil's house, and the witches He liked best (seen here perched around Him) were taken into bed chambers off the main dining hall, the keys to which dangle from ribbons clutched in His talons. The Devil had carnal knowledge of the witches and their Sons and Daughters married and brought forth toads and serpents, which are seen amongst them.
